Ryan Gosling's upcoming portrayal of Neil Armstrong in First Man will see him recount the Apollo 11 mission to the moon and the US space man's life between 1961 and 1969. It is set to open the 2018 Venice Film Festival, and Gosling's performance in a certain scene is already being discussed in reverent tones.

The trailer dropped last month and while many have been discussing everything from the impressive cinematography to the peek we get at an emotional moment between Gosling and his on-screen son, you might well have missed the iconic watch on display.

preview for First Man - Official Trailer

In the trailer we see Gosling donning an Omega Speedmaster in various scenes. The actor has a history of strapping on timeless watches in his movies, having worn a Patek Philippe in Drive, a Rolex in Crazy, Stupid, Love and a vintage Omega in his most recent film, La La Land.

True to life, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore the Omega Speedmaster on their historic Apollo 11 mission.

The Speedmaster successfully passed NASA's tests and became qualified for spaceflight in 1965. As the first men to set foot on the moon, the Omega model is therefore the first watch to stake the same claim, earning it the nickname “moonwatch.”

The Speedmaster celebrated its 60th birthday last year and Omega released a Moonwatch Automatic Master Chronometer edition to mark the occasion.
