When Martin Scorsese recently criticised Marvel, calling the studio's movies "theme parks" rather than cinema, many in Hollywood hit right back at the legendary director. Disney CEO Bob Iger was one of those to question Scorsese's comments at the time, and now he's planning to meet the Irishman filmmaker to clear the air.
Iger was named Time magazine's Businessperson of the Year for 2019 and he recently addressed Scorsese's thoughts on the MCU once again in an interview with the publication. The studio boss called the remarks "nasty" and "not fair to the people who are making the movies".
"If Marty Scorsese wants to be in the business of taking artistic risk, all power to him," Iger added. "It doesn't mean that what we're doing isn’t art."
The article then confirmed that, according to Iger, "his people and Marty's people are arranging a get-together".
Marvel boss Kevin Feige might want to get in on that meeting too, since he also wasn't exactly thrilled by Scorsese's criticisms. "I think it's unfortunate," he told The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast last month.
"I think myself and everybody that works on these movies loves cinema, loves movies, loves going to the movies, loves to watch a communal experience in a movie theatre full of people. I think it's fun for us to take our success and use it to take risks and go in different places.
"Everybody has a different definition of cinema. Everybody has a different definition of art. Everybody has a different definition of risk."
