In the US, a country that’s not yet been able to manage the destructive capacity of the handgun, Elon Musk decided to go ahead and introduce flamethrowers to the mix.
His tunnel construction project, the Boring Company, sold out its 20,000 flamethrowers within just a few days, and on Saturday, the first thousand units were made available to buyers.
Though selling flamethrowers is apparently legal, Musk named the device the "Not-a-Flamethrower," in order to circumvent any shipping snafus. They shoot flames about four feet, which has caused some to suggest that they're pretty much jazzy, expensive blow torches.
"Obviously, a flamethrower is a super terrible idea. Definitely don’t buy one," Musk tweeted in January. "Unless you like fun."
The sale of the flamethrowers netted $10 million for The Boring Company. Last year, Musk announced that the company had received a permit to build an underground hyperloop tunnel between New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
In keeping with the gravity with which dangerous weaponry should be treated, Musk based the terms and conditions for flamethrower owners on the style of Dr. Seuss.
