The first trailer for dark pharma drama Maniac has been released by Netflix, and it promises a deep exploration of the human brain.

"Once you start to appreciate the structure of the mind, there's no reason to believe that anything about us can't be changed," says a measured voice, over clips of Emma Stone and Jonah Hill staring at each other in grey lab suits from either side of a table.

The Netflix series from True Detective and Beasts of No Nation director Cary Fukunaga is the story of two strangers who find themselves caught up in a pharmaceutical trial gone awry. The trial is for a drug treatment that will cure any mental illness or anguish.

Though it looks like science fiction, the series is described as a 'dark psychological drama' and the first images look straight out of an episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror. Initial promo shots show Stone and Hill's characters using "the technological device used to bring patients into their dream world."
