When it comes to on-screen deaths, drowning in a lift is pretty unambiguous. Vesper Lynd is kaput, and we shouldn’t expect a revenge-fuelled rise from the dead in Bond 25.

But despite his icy declaration that “the bitch is dead” in the final moments of Casino Royale, Bond’s tragic relationship with Vesper resonates throughout – and maybe even defines – the Daniel Craig era.

That’s why Eva Green, who played Vesper in the 2007 film, was asked about the possibility of popping up in a flashback for Craig’s final outing.

"I really enjoyed the experience of Casino Royale, and it’s such a beautiful movie, and also the fact there was a strong love story in it, made it very unique and strong," Green told Yahoo Movies.

"I don’t know, it’s always a bit tricky, flashbacks. You don’t want it to be cheesy. God knows. It depends on the writing."

In the interview, she also lavished praise on Daniel Craig’s performance as Bond, talking about why he makes such a convincing 007.

"Daniel is such a great Bond because he’s so raw and rugged, there’s something very manly, it’s not mannered. There’s something very virile, and I like that."

Green has previously revealed that she nearly didn’t audition for the part. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "I was probably a bit stupid or naive. I said, ‘Ugh, a Bond girl? What kind of prissy girl is that?’”

"They also kept the script secret. So it wasn’t until they gave me the script [nine months later] that I realised it was a meaty role. I didn't see her as a Bond girl. She’s a strong character; she’s got cracks."
