In news that should come as a surprise to approximately no-one, the controversial slavery series devised by David Benioff and DB Weiss is officially dead. The Game of Thrones bosses sparked significant backlash after their planned series, Confederate, was announced back in 2017. The drama, which had the potential to disappoint even more than Thrones's final season, was set to take place in an alternate future in the days before a third US Civil War.

The apparent sci-fi series also envisioned an America where "the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution".

With controversy guaranteed and Benioff and Weiss now tied up in a sizeable deal with Netflix, HBO's president Casey Bloys has confirmed to TVLine that Confederate will not be moving forward any further.

Fortunately for Benioff and Weiss – and fans, we expect – the pair are keeping busy with an entirely different project instead: a movie based on HP Lovecraft's iconic horror novels.

According to reports last month, the producing duo are planning a monster-themed movie in which the creatures Lovecraft writes about are actually real, including one of his most famous creations, Cthulhu. Sounds like much safer territory.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are now available on DVD and Blu-ray
