Hours after the news that one Game of Thrones prequel has been cancelled by HBO, another has been confirmed to be happening.
Titled House of the Dragon, it's based on Game of Thrones companion book, Fire & Blood, and has been given a 10-episode series by HBO.
Set 300 years before the events of the main show, the prequel tells the story of House Targaryen.
Fire & Blood author George RR Martin created the prequel with Ryan Condal (Colony), who will be a co-showrunner with Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik – the man behind 'Battle of the Bastards', 'Hardhome' and 'The Long Night'. Sapochnik will direct the first episode.
A poster has already been released with the tagline: "Fire Will Reign"
"The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories," said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming. "We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George."
Late on Tuesday (October 29), it was reported that HBO's first Thrones prequel, starring Naomi Watts, was no longer happening.
That series, from showrunner Jane Goldman, would have taken place thousands of years before the flagship show, whereas House of the Dragon is set only a few hundred years in the past. So Westeros won't look quite as different as it might have done.
Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray now.
