Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has cleared up the confusion over the upcoming prequel show's title.

HBO has deliberately not publicly named the Thrones prequel, even after casting Naomi Watts in a leading role. All that was announced was that it would be set centuries before Game of Thrones in the Age of Heroes.

However, Martin named the prequel as The Long Night in a reaction to Watts joining the show. "Casting is now underway for The Long Night, the first of the Game of Thrones successor series to ordered to film," he previously wrote.

Writing on his website, Martin has now backtracked, saying: "Oh, I should also mention… HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT.

"[That] is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa."

Still, he also said "the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place".

"I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to. We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry."

Elsewhere, Sean Bean recently hinted that he'd be open to returning as Ned Stark in a prequel, if it could be worked out in some way.
