By A teaser for the eighth season of Game of Thrones aired this weekend, spreading like the wildfire that toasted the bay of King's Landing and conjuring theories about whether Bran was absent because he's the Night King or if the mysterious feather surfacing was a hint Jon Snow would end up on the Iron Throne.
All this from a 1 minute 44 second clip in which basically nothing happened. It's going to be a long old road to 14 April.
Anyway - as exciting as the "Crypts of Winterfell" was, it seemed unquestionable that, following the teaser-trailer pattern of modern hype-building TV advertising, a more formal trailer would be on its way soon.
And it will be - but not with the blessing of show-runners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the pair have admitted they would rather all the footage was a complete surprise to viewers.
“[David Lynch] was saying he wished there were no trailers,” Benioff said. “And it’s true, you could just go into a movie and see something completely fresh.”
“I wish there were no trailers,” Weiss added. “I just want somebody to say, ‘Trust me, go see this.’”
However, they did admit there is some merit to trailers in bringing in new fans. In response to whether they would hold back all footage for the season premiere, Weiss said, “We won’t. Because then we went and saw Ready Player One with our kids and they played the Westworld trailer and it looked great. And we’re like, ‘Ah, we should do that.’"
