Gary Neville was nothing if not dependable.

Alex Ferguson trusted the former Manchester United right back because of his relentless passion and steely nerve, and he repaid his boss’ faith with eight Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

But that’s not to say that Neville was cool and collected for every minute of his Old Trafford career.

In the build-up to Manchester United’s Champions League clash against Sevilla this week, Neville has explained how a similar European tie almost two decades ago represented a personal low point.

When asked to name the worst performance of his career, Neville told the 'United We Stand fanzine': "Real Madrid at home in 2000.

"I was going through a terrible period with confidence and felt like I didn't want the ball.

United, who has won the trophy the season before, drew the first leg at the Bernabeu 0-0 but ultimately lost 3-2 at home.

"I remember being on the pitch, thinking 'this is a low moment for me'.

"I was 25 and had never felt like that before. Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup was a bottle job for the team, too. Terrible, terrible."
