Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona unveiled a statue of himself in India yesterday, and the monument’s disastrous likeness has attracted hilarious criticism across Twitter.

The 12-foot high statue depicts the moment that Maradona lifted the 1986 World Cup, but could easily pass for a dinner lady posing with a massive chicken drumstick or, as many have pointed out, Susan Boyle.

The statue has also drawn parallels with the much-maligned bust of Cristiano Ronaldo that sits outside Madeira airport in Portugal.

The 57-year-old was visiting India for the unveiling, and told the massive crowd that gathered for him:

"I don't think I'm the god of football. I just consider myself as a simple football player,"

"It's amazing to have my statue here. I am glad to be in Kolkata for the second time. Thank you very much for the love."

Maradona was accompanied by his girlfriend Rocio Oliva as he handed out 10,000 rupees (£116) cheques to 11 cancer sufferers.
