JJ Abrams is pretty much the king of classy reboots, having worked his magic on Star Trek, Star Wars and Mission: Impossible films.

But it seems he's all rebooted out now, as he's told Digital Spy that he's keen to try something new next.

"I've written some things in the last year or so," he said. "One of them is a show we've just set up with HBO and there's something else.

"These were original storylines and things that I'm really excited about getting to, because I felt like I was looking to not reboot anything."

He did, however, emphasise that he feels there's a definite place for remakes and sequels.

"There was a time when filmmakers would be inspired by things and then go off and tell their stories... and the business is such that you get inspired by things and then you remake those things," he said.

"And it works and there's huge business sometimes, and we've all seen versions where we've seen that it didn't.

"It allows for new filmmakers, original storylines, where [the films] connect but not in a way that they make it a remake or a literal sequel. It keeps it unexpected and keeps it fun."

But he finished up by saying: "If I could do anything, it probably wouldn't be to want to reboot something."

Having said that, given Abrams' next directorial project is Star Wars: Episode IX, it could be a little while until he gets to try something new...

As a producer, the filmmaker's latest release is a third movie in the Cloverfield franchise, The Cloverfield Paradox – but he has said that he doesn't think of the Cloverfield films as being connected, calling them "spiritual sequels".

The Cloverfield Paradox is on Netflix now.
