Many years on from when Heath Ledger captivated the world with his maverick turn as The Joker, Hollywood has apparently made a collective agreement to have every actor in the world play that role until it is run into the ground.

Not content with Jared Leto's 'zany' take on the Batman villain in Suicide Squad, yesterday it was confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix will also play The Joker in an origin story, "meant to be different from comic book superhero movies".

According to Warner Bros, the film will be an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".

Details are sparse thus far though production is set to begin this September, ahead of a possible 2019 release. Todd Phillips who directed The Hangover is set to direct the film which is has been reported will have a "gritty tone" and will portray the Clown Prince of Crime as a failed stand-up comedian as in the graphic novel The Killing Joke.

If we've taking cues from The Hangover perhaps The Joker will turn to a life of sadistic violence after a huge weekend in Vegas with the boys.
