The first trailer for Life Itself has dropped and promises a heartbreaking dissection of human relationships with plenty of teary glances into the distance thrown in.

The couple are played by Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde, and the high profile cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Olivia Cooke, Annette Bening and Mandy Patinkin.

'As a young New York couple goes from college romance to marriage and the birth of their first child, the unexpected twists of their journey create reverberations that echo over continents and through lifetimes,' the IMDB page for the film reveals.

"Life itself tricks us. It misleads us. It paints one man a hero, when he may well be a villain. Hero or villain? Villain or Hero?" asks Olivia Wilde's character Abby during the trailer.

It is directed and written by Dan Fogelman, the screenwriter of Emmy-winning US Series This Is Us and excellent romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid Love.

The film is split between New York City and Carmona, Spain though the trailer gives no clarity as to how these two worlds are linked apart from stating that the film, "celebrates the human condition and all of its complications with humour, poignancy and love."

We also see Isaac's character mysteriously asked at the end of the trailer “Are you glad it happened?” suggesting there's a secret lurking that makes this more compelling than a traditional love story.

'Life Itself' is due to be released in cinemas on Sept. 21
