We can lose our minds over fanciful Sony patents all we want, but the truth is we know bupkis about the PlayStation 5 and its capabilities.

Still, at least it looks like we’ve got our first confirmed title for the console. Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises have just announced that ‘The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’, a narrative-driven adventure game, will be released in 2021 on “all relevant console platforms at that time”.

With most industry insiders predicting that the PS5 will launch in 2020 or early 2021, it seems very likely that Gollum will creep his way onto the console. It’s not know whether the successor to the Xbox One will be released at that stage, or if Google’s new streaming platform Stadia enters into their plans.

Speaking in an interview with PCGamer, Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann explained: “We tell Gollum's story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien”

“At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years.”

Considering Daedelic only own the rights to the books, rather than the famous film adaptations, we’ll be seeing a new take on the duplicitous character.

We don’t know anything else about the game as of yet. Most Lord of the Rings games are hack-and-slash affairs, but we can’t imagine Gollum will be thrust into battle. Speaking more about the game, Fichtelmann said: "You'll come to decisions you have to make, and you'll have the two voices talking to you. He may change his mind, and this is a clue about how it will play."
