It's been a long time coming, but we finally have the first trailer to Martin Scorsese's The Irishman – and it's a doozy.

It didn't have to work so hard to get us excited – we would have been happy with 2 minutes of Joe Pesci wordlessly staring at the camera – but work hard it does. There's explosions. There's Pacino, De Niro and Pesci together again, knocking gold rings like a bunch of penitentiary-bound Power Rangers. There's the incredible, much touted de-ageing tech on full display for the first time. Watch it above, why don't you?

The movie struggled for financing before Netflix came along to save the day, and it's now set to arrive on our screens in September. Long-time Scorsese collaborator Steven Zaillian based the screenplay on the celebrated book 'I Heard You Paint Houses', written by Charles Brandt.

To get his inside information on the secretive mob, Brandt interviewed imprisoned hitman Frank Sheeran over the course of five years. In the process of their chats, Sheeran admitted to pulling off 25 Mafia-sanctioned murders.

Pesci reportedly took a lot of cajoling to take the role, refusing it over 50 times. Scorsese and Pesci have made three movies together, not including The Irishman, and the actor won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Goodfellas. Since then he has largely ducked out of the limelight, appearing in only a few films over the past twenty years.
