The question of whether the X-Men could be folded into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe is one that remains the subject of fevered fan theories, but it's one that's knotted up with complications.

We know that Deadpool is in the same universe, after all that palaver in Deadpool 2 and Charles Xavier's little cameo, but so far the MCU has been split down the middle with Captain America, Iron Man and all that lot on one side, and the X-Men and their gang on the other. However, now Fox and Disney have merged, one of the big roadblocks is out of the way.

Crucially though, we don't know whether the main men - James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender - would be up for returning as Charles Xavier and Magneto to leap across the MCU divide and pull the two halves together in another film. So, Esquire asked them: would you be up for it?

"I don't know," McAvoy said. "Is the script going to be good? Do you think there’s going to be a good script?"

Yes, Esquire said. Yes we do.

"I don't know if I believe you," McAvoy went on. "I don't know if you know that. How can you know that?"

It's just a gut feeling, we tell James McAvoy.

"Yeah, it's just, I guess what James is trying to say…" Fassbender did some wibbly-wobbly telepathic gestures. "Hang on one second… let me just… make sure yes. It's, uh, you know, there's just so many variables there. None of it, none of it in our control. So really pointless for us to think about it. You know?"

We do know. It's not a no, it's not a yes. But it's not a no! That's the important thing.

But it's not a yes.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is in UK cinemas now.
