While much attention is rightly being paid to who will be directing the forthcoming James Bond film - it's looking like Danny Boyle by the way - some consideration needs to be given to who will play Daniel Craig's on-screen nemesis.

Speaking at the Esquire Townhouse last year, Spectre's villain Christoph Waltz categorically ruled himself out of appearing in next instalment saying, "I can tell you that I will not be part of this next James Bond adventure".

So with a role to be filled, a Reddit user suggested actor Michael Shannon would make a superb villain and his suggestion has really caught on with over 500 comments in response.

But he might have competition, as last December Kenneth Brannagh said he would love to play a Bond villain.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said: “I think as an actor that is always delicious to play. I am a connoisseur of those Bond villains. But is a hard one to do. I loved Javier Bardem inSkyfall.”

He added that the villains Craig faced were, “almost Shakespearean.”
