Xbox honcho Phil Spencer promised to set “the benchmark for console gaming” during Microsoft’s impressive showcase at E3 2018.

"The same team that delivered unprecedented performance with Xbox One X is deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to set the benchmark for console gaming," he told crowds at the Los Angeles Convention Centre.

His mention of “consoles” signifies that, much like Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft could be heading into the world of high-spec handheld gaming.

But while rumours persist that Xbox’s rivals see portable consoles as the main focus of their attention, Spencer was more traditional in his outlook for the Xbox One successor.

He said that he wants "people to know that we're committed to the experience they love, of playing great games on a console on their television, and we think that's an important part of the future of our brand"

The Xbox showcase went down well on Twitter, thanks to the imminent arrival of Halo Infinite, Gears of War 5, Kingdom Heart 3 and a host of other long-awaited games.

Beyond extended gameplay footage of the upcoming Spider-Man, Sony’s underwhelming conference was less well received.
