According to Deadline, Netflix is developing a scripted series based on video game-turned-film franchise Resident Evil.

German production and distribution company Constantin Film, which was behind the much-maligned movie series starring Milla Jovovich, is said to working with Netflix on the project.

Constantin Film’s most recent instalment, the benevolently titled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, is rated the best in the series with 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix chiefs reportedly envisage Resident Evil as a zombie-infested drama series, in which the shady inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation come to the fore.

There’s certainly an appetite for it. Since Resident Evil was first adapted for the big screen in 2002 the series has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film franchise based on a video game.

One thing’s for sure, Milla Jovovich is unlikely to play a part. Last month, Constantin Film hired Joannes Roberts to write and direct a Resident Evil reboot with a new cast.
