No longer shying away from sharing its data with the world, Netflix has now revealed the viewing figures for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman.

On Tuesday, the streaming service's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, revealed that 26.4 million homes watched 70 per cent or more of the movie. OK, so that's a bizarre way to judge viewing figures – if someone works out of the cinema before the end, that doesn't bode well for them – but it's still a lot of eyes. Netflix has also estimated that this figure will rise to 40 million homes by the end of the year.

The Irishman ended up in the streaming service's hands as Scorsese couldn't find a studio to finance the mobster epic. But despite only being given a limited release in theatres, it's still estimated to earn $6.7 million from its run.

It's also just received five Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director.

"People just weren't interested in financing it – and that was before the CGI," Scorsese told Entertainment Weekly. "Nobody would give us the money. But I really felt that De Niro and I had one more picture to make, at least, and he was really connected with the character."

The Irishman is now available to stream on Netflix
