Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch is reported to have saved a cyclist from four attackers on Friday night, just a few streets away from Baker Street.

The 41-year-old is said to have jumped out of a cab he was sharing with wife, Sophie Hunter, when he saw a Deliveroo cyclist being hit over the head with a bottle on Marylebone High Street.

The driver of the car, Manuel Dias, told The Sun: “Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless. If he hadn’t stepped in, the cyclist could have been seriously injured. Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street.

“He stood there instructing them in the street, shouting, ‘Leave him alone.’ I had hold of one lad and Benedict another. He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it, to be honest.”

According to the paper, the actor said: “I did it out of … well, I had to, you know.”

Benedict’s name has long fallen out of the running for James Bond, but this act of vigilante, Sherlock-esque heroics could well move him up in the rankings.

It certainly didn’t do Tom Hardy’s chances any harm. Back in April 2017, the Dunkirk star reportedly chased a thief through people’s gardens in Richmond, London.

He vaulted fences and walls before finally apprehending the runner, patting him down and announcing: “I caught the cunt!”
