Peaky Blinders spin-offs and a film are in the works right now, according to writer and showrunner Steven Knight.

"I'm writing series six at the moment. That's almost done," Knight told the Legitimate Peaky Blinders Festival in Birmingham at the weekend. "Then I'm going to do series seven, then I'm looking at spin-offs, maybe a movie. It's up to us. It's up to the people involved."

Knight said that he didn't much fancy a prequel as it would stymie his options in suddenly executing characters.

"You can't kill a character who can show up in the series," he said. "The problem with prequels is you’re limiting yourself as to where it can go."

Knight stilled the flurry of excitement and mild horror which surrounded Liam Gallagher's sudden announcement that he fancied a cameo on Peaky Blinders by explaining that it was part of a quid pro quo deal wherein Knight and director Anthony Byrne made him a video and got him to play at the festival itself.

"He said, 'if you do my video, I'll do the festival'," Knight said. He added that despite pitches from all manner of interested parties, it's unlikely that there'll suddenly be a Sergeant Pepper-style montage of famous fans milling around in the background of any upcoming episodes.

"In terms of appearances we've always had a lot of incoming interest," Knight said. "What I'm trying to not do is populate the scene with people who are known for other things, because I think it's quite distracting."
