Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has caused quite the stir with his new facial hair.

He's gained cult status for his trademark threads over the years, but fans quickly changed their tune after he was seen brandishing a chinful of ginger peach-fuzz.

In fact, the beard was so poorly received that fans launched a petition on change.org titled ‘Banish the Beard’, imploring the star to ‘snap out of it’ and shave his whiskers ahead of the band’s summer tour, which is taking place alongside the release of their sixth studio album, 'Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino'.

The petition in question.

The petition reads: “Genetics gave him many opportunities in this life, an iconic signing voice, facial structure that could cut a man. They did not, however, give him the opportunity to look good with a beard. Or even to properly grow one.” Enough said.

It continues: “If this beard keeps growing, will us fans even be able to hear that voice from behind the beard?”

Yet, when asked about the petition by German music outlet Intro, Turner didn’t seem all that fussed by the whole scenario.

“There is a petition? asked Turner. “I had no idea. But it amuses me. It’s really crazy that people are so interested in hairstyles and stuff.”

Well, turns out people are interested: 2,904 of them at the time of writing, to be exact.

Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino hits the shelves on 11 May.
