By If you'd been quietly getting more and more excited about Quentin Tarantino's mooted Star Trek film, you might want to start quietly getting less and less excited about it. We know he's got a script for it, and it's R-rated, but Tarantino himself says he's backing away from the whole idea.
"I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet," Tarantino told Consequence of Sound.
That reopens the longstanding question of Tarantino's next move, and exactly how strictly he's going to hold himself to his declared ambition of finishing with filmmaking after his 10th feature.
He's currently on nine after Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but he's intimated at various different times that he wouldn't really count a sequel – we're already bounding both Kill Bill films as one to keep it at nine as things stand – or a film he directed but hadn't also scripted. As it turns out, though, Tarantino considered stopping with his latest film.
"In a strange way, it seems like this movie, Hollywood, would be my last," Tarantino said. "So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà! kind of statement. I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, 'Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?' No, no, don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it."
