In a year chock-full of excellent looking games (especially in the final third), Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 could end up being one of the best-selling and best-reviewed.

The publisher has dropped a brand new trailer, and while we still haven't got a glimpse of the gameplay, it might be teasing something just as incredibly tantalising: the return of John Marston.

You can possibly see the original Red Dead Redemption protagonist at about the 1 minute 39 second mark, as a man with very distinctive scars on his face is dragged out onto the street by gang members, staring at new playable character Arthur Morgan.

Obviously Marston bit the bucket near the end of the 2010 game, but despite the 2 billing, this is actually a prequel. In this game, Morgan and Marston are both part of the Dutch van der Linde gang, while in the first RDR, Marston works with the US government to wipe out the remnants of the gang.

After multiple setbacks from its original 2017 release window, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 26, 2018.

PS4 owners will be able to access a selection of online content earlier than other platforms, although the details have yet to be announced.
