• Bloomberg reports Samsung is already working on two new foldable smartphones
  • The South Korean company have not yet released the pricey Galaxy Fold
  • The two new models sound similar in design to foldable phones from Motorola and Huawei

It’s still early days for foldable smartphones, but Samsung is reportedly already moving full-steam ahead with two new models.

The news comes a mere month after the South Korean manufacturer announced the Galaxy Fold, as they bid to become early leaders in the market.

According to Bloomberg, one of the models will be very similar to Huawei’s Mate X, which folds away from the user. The other is said to be closer to a clamshell-design with a small display on outside, much like the forthcoming Motorola RAZR.

It’s no surprise that Samsung are testing out so many design approaches to foldable phones. The Galaxy Fold, which is released in April at a price of $1,980, folds on top of itself and effectively doubles the thickness of the phone. The Mate X, on the other hand, folds into a vacant slot resulting in a less bulky handset.

“No one knows what the ideal design is yet,” said Bryan Ma, vice president of devices research at IDC, told Bloomberg. “The time is ripe for experimentation. Many of these designs won’t be successful, but industry players will learn valuable lessons along the way.”

Samsung’s plans may seem a little hasty, considering there’s no proof that consumers will hand over so much money for the innovation, but they’re pulling out all the stops to get an edge over Apple. The Cali tech giants have not yet announced plans for a foldable iPhone.

Bloomberg believes that Samsung will unveil the clamshell design first, late this year or in early 2020.
