After Captain America signed off from the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the conclusion of Endgame – he swapped saving reality and all that for slow-dancing with Peggy and his super-suit for a very sensible shirt-fleece-Harrington layered combo – fans have been wondering if he could ever come back.

The answer from writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is a resounding no. Sorry.

"I also don’t want to," Markus told Screen Rant. "I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don't need to do it anymore. I'd hate to gin up something hokey to get them back."

"I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it'll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror," McFeely agreed. "This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies, because a very successful studio just put their tools down."

So there you go. Whether he'll pop up in a more unexpected way, like he did in that school video in Spider-Man: Homecoming is still up in the air, but that's clutching at some very small straws.
