Wasn’t November nice? We all fell asleep to the soft lullaby of cute little mister Baby Yoda, feeling warm and safe as big mean Star Wars fans went away for a little while, and we rocked gently back and forth as Mando’s ship cruised quietly across the galaxy.
Wake up! The meanies are back. And they’re mad! Whoo boy, they’re mad. Let me tell you how mad they are. There’s a big movie coming out next month. It’s called The Rise of Skywalker. It’s the biggest movie because it’s the last in the Skywalker Saga, which goes all the way back to Star Wars: A New Hope, the first big movie. And now, all the people in the movie are running around promoting it, and they’re saying some things that the meanies don’t like.
Here’s why fan mad, who fan mad at, and what fan say to who fan mad at. Most importantly: will fan be mad forever?
Why fan mad?
Oh, a bunch of reasons! Fans are always mad when Baby Yoda isn’t involved. But fans are mad now because JJ Abrams, the director of The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker, and a couple other Star Wars cast members, might’ve said some not-nice things about the movie in between the two: The Last Jedi. That big movie was directed by Rian Johnson, who some want to toss out of a spaceship for making Star Wars too smart. Others like him though!
“[The Last Jedi is] a bit of a meta approach to the story,” Abrams told The New York Times. “I don’t think that people go to Star Wars to be told, ‘This doesn’t matter.’”
He added that the story "needed a pendulum swing in one direction in order to swing in the other."
The cast has chimed in too, namely Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. Ridley told the Times that she “cried” when Abrams was announced as The Rise of Skywalker director, and Boyega said about The Force Awakens, “Even as a normal person in the audience, I wanted to see where that story was going.”
John Boyega said another thing in a recent Hypebeast interview:
"The Force Awakens" I think was the beginning of something quite solid. "The Last Jedi," if I’m being honest, I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.

What fan say?
Fans are divided right now. Fans who like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars movie are very mad that JJ said mean things.
But other fans – the fans who like Abrams’s Star Wars movies – said fans who like Johnson took Abrams’s words out of context, and he wasn’t actually being mean.
Will fan be mad no matter what?
As long as there are big space movies, fans will be mad.
