It’s been a bumper year for HD remakes. Slick updates on Shadow of the Colossus and Shenmue stood the test of time, and the long-awaited revisit of 1998’s Resident Evil 2 looks set to do the same.

Just take a look at the first gameplay footage, unveiled by Capcom at the Gamescom convention in Germany. It captures Claire Redfield taking on a big, horrible-looking bastard, with a brand new third person, over-the-shoulder camera in full effect.

The remake of the critically-acclaimed classic was announced back in 2015, but didn’t reappear until Sony’s PlayStation E3 press conference earlier this year.

It’s set for release on the PS4, Windows PC and Xbox One on 25 January, 2019. Impressive footage from the PC version was also released by graphics card manufacturer Nvidia, who ran it at 60 fps at a 4K resolution.

Delving back into your favourite childhood video games can be a pretty frustrating experience, thanks to long loading times and clunky controls and camera angles, so the demand for HD remakes is understandable.

We’re still in the dark over the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII remake, however. Original Square Enix staff members have returned to work on the game, which is being released in multiple parts, but a release date is yet to be announced.
