Excitement surrounds every aspect of Scorsese's forthcoming project The Irishman, from the frankly ridiculous cast (Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci!) to the director's return to gangster-ridden New York.

It'll be the fourth time Pesci, De Niro and Scorsese have worked together, although there has been a 22 year gap since their last film Casino in 1995.

The film is based on Charles Brandt's book I Heard You Paint Houses which documents the exploits of gangster Frank 'The Irishman' Sheeran, as played by De Niro. Filming is currently underway and according to reports the Netflix-backed project is going way over budget.

Slashfilm reports that, "Netflix originally bought the film for $105 million (£76m) and agreed to a $125 million (£90m) budget. But costs have soared to $175 million (£126m) according to an insider, “and they haven’t done the music yet.”

This follows a report from Deadline which says, "The film is getting ready to wrap and still has to be edited and special effects are still to be done to reverse the ages of the actors."

Please don't let anything bad happen to this potential masterpiece...
