The long-rumbling debate over whether Idris Elba will get to play James Bond has just started rumbling a little bit more loudly again.

The odds on Idris Elba taking up the role after Daniel Craig hangs up his Walther PPK have tumbled from 12/1 to 8/1.

That's in the wake of the announcement of new episodes of his detective drama Luther, according to bookmakers Coral, and despite that fact that we know Elba's fiancée isn't keen on the idea.

A spokesman for Coral said: "Idris Elba has been suggested as a candidate for the next James Bond for a while now but if the bets we’re seeing are anything to go by he would be a hugely popular pick as 007. It’s also indicative of just how excited people are that Luther is returning to our screens."

It's quite something to think that anyone could have forgotten completely about Idris Elba until stumbling across the Luther announcement, then immediately launched themselves toward their phone to whack a fiver on him becoming Bond, but there we are. The numbers don't lie.

Elba's still something of an outsideR in Coral's betting currently though. The joint favourites to take over from Craig after the Danny Boyle-directed Bond 25 are James Norton and Tom Hardy at 3/1, with Poldark's Aidan Turner at 4/1 and Boardwalk Empire's Jack Huston at 6/1.

Cillian Murphy's at 10/1 and Tom Hiddleston's at 16/1, while "any female" - who you might recall from her extraordinary run of winning every Best Actress Oscar since 1927 - is at 12/1.
