The Simpsons has paid tribute to Professor Stephen Hawking.

The world-renowned physicist passed away last Wednesday (March 14) at the age of 76 from natural causes, with Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch and the cast of The Big Bang Theory among those leading the tributes to the brilliant mind.

Now, The Simpsons has paid its respects to Hawking, who made four appearances on the show between 1999 and 2010.

Following Sunday night's episode (March 19) on FOX in the US, the animation honoured him with an emotional In Memoriam slide before the credits, which featured a picture of Hawking and Lisa ascending into the sky on his jet-powered wheelchair.

It was captioned: "In loving memory of Stephen Hawking."

The episode was even more poignant given that it was also the last instalment written by late Simpsons writer and producer Kevin Curran.

Curran passed away in October 2016 but made his final writing credit during last night's episode 'Homer Is Where the Art Isn't'.

The episode guest-starred Trainwreck and Superbad actor Bill Hader as a 1970s-style detective tasked with proving Homer's innocence, after he is accused of stealing a million-dollar painting.
