Game of Thrones has a long history of collaborating with contemporary musicians. Members of Coldplay and Sigur Rós and Mastodon have all famously made cameo appearances on the show, along with a whole host of other musicians. In Season Seven, Ed Sheeran was awkwardly forced into an episode where he appeared as a Lannister soldier who sang and was concerned about underage drinking and is probably dead by now.
Now, going into Season Eight, Pitchfork reports that The Weeknd, SZA, and Travis Scott are making a new song for Game of Thrones. According to Pitchfork:
A source close the project confirmed to Pitchfork that the new track—which will feature in the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones”—is coming soon. According to the source, “Game of Thrones” asked the Weeknd to record the song for fans. The Weeknd then brought SZA and Travis Scott onto the project.
Rumours of the Game of Thrones collaboration first started circulating on Reddit, and HBO has not yet confirmed Pitchfork's report.
It's unclear how this song will be worked into the final season of Game of Thrones. In previous cases with Sheeran, Coldplay, and Sigur Rós, the musicians actually appeared in the episode to perform their song. Considering hip-hop and R&B music isn't exactly fitting with the popular music of Westeros, it will be interesting to see if or how The Weeknd, SZA, or Travis Scott appear in the show.
I vote that they appear as a trio of particularly talented undead wights.
