Now that everyone's come around to the idea of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system since the World Cup - specifically, at that moment when it looked like it might get Cristiano Ronaldo sent off for an off-the-ball incident and he looked like he might burst into tears - the Premier League is set to trial VAR in 15 matches this season.

The first games to use the system will be all six 3pm kick-offs on 15 September, with multiple games being managed at a time to prove the system's centre at Stockley Park near Heathrow has the sturdiness to cope when there are loads of different incidents happening at once.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which represents the league's referees, will present its findings to Premier League shareholders at the end of the season with the hope that VAR will be introduced fully next season.

The system will work in the same way as it did at the World Cup, though the VAR hub's referees won't be able to communicate with the referee on the pitch.

The Premier League has been slower to take up VAR than other European leagues. While there were tests in League Cup games last season, and testing will continue at another 60 cup games this season, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga have all committed fully to the technology from the start of this season.
