Ben Affleck’s stint as the Dark Knight hasn’t exactly gone to plan. Following two critically-slammed Justice League movies, rumours abound that he’s going to hand in his cowl.

Brother Casey Affleck told WEEI Sports that, "He’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think. Or so I would say," and Matt Reeves, director of the upcoming standalone Batman outing, is reportedly looking for replacements.

And if he needs some help in that task, who better than Commissioner Gordan AKA Gary Oldman? The recent Golden Globe winner opened up about which actor he thinks should become the Caped Crusader – and it’s a not a bad choice.

In an interview with TooFab, Oldman said: “I would like to see someone like Joaquin Phoenix play it. This is no disrespect to Ben Affleck. I think it really depends on who is at the wheel that lifts it.”

Pheonix was linked to the role way back in 1999, when Darren Aronofsky was approached to adapt the iconic graphic novel 'Year One'.

“I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman but Warners torpedoed the idea of his R-rated superhero film and instead focused on Nolan‘s Dark Knight saga," said Aronofsky.

Perhaps the right move in retrospect, but Phoenix might just get a second chance. Other names in the mix are Mad Men star Jon Hamm and Jake Gyllenhaal.
