After a lengthy break following a disappointing second season, True Detective will return in January with what looks like an impressive new story starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. Season Three also marks the return of True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, who will be credited with writing the entire season, as he did with the first.

Ali plays Wayne Hays, a detective trying to solve a mystery from his past. From the looks of this first trailer, it brings back a similar structure to season one, with an unreliable narrator and two parallel timelines. The show is set in the Ozarks across Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Pizzolatto will also direct a couple of episodes alongside Daniel Sackheim (The Leftovers, Game of Thrones) and Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, The Green Room).

True Detective Season Three—which also stars John Charles Dickson, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, and Sarah Gadon—will return in January.
