Phew.

If, like us, you stayed awake from election night – hooked to US news channels, a red and blue map burned into your retinas, Googling weird American words like ‘Tabulator’ and ‘Newt Gingrich’ – then you no doubt welcome the news that our friends across the pond have landed on a result. Democrat nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden crossed the 270 mark needed to beat Trump in the race. He’s done it (right?). It’s over (barring weeks of hostile litigation). Everything’s okay (we think?). It’s probably about time that you finally went to sleep.

But that doesn’t mean that you’re going to, does it? Oh no. How could you when there are so many eviscerating Trump memes flying around on social media. While most British red tops opted for simple ‘You’re Fired’ headlines, Twitter and Instagram have been getting far more creative with their celebratory posts. These are the best we’ve seen so far.

Others have tried to imagine what the actual process of getting that booking was like for the poor person who had to make the whole thing happen with about an hour's notice.

Then again, perhaps it's so funny because it touches on some fundamental truth in many of our lives.

And there was a chance for the return of one of the choicest memes of the last four years. Better get those ear defenders back on, kid.

Note: Poochy died on the way back to his home planet. Hopefully not a portent of the next six months to come.

And, as we discovered in our other memes piece from the days before Trump was comprehensively defeated – remember them! – there was a thriving market for memes bouncing off Kevin Keegan's famous meltdown directed at Sir Alex Ferguson during the title run-in of 1996. This week has given it a fitting coda.

Davina got stuck in early doors.

As did Philadelphia.

Twitter, of course, was full of compassion for Trump voters.

The wrestling memes have been coming thick and fast.
