Sheffield's Lord Mayor Magid Magid has declared Donald Trump a "wasteman" and attempted to ban him from visiting the city.

Magid, a Green Party councillor who at 28 became the youngest Lord Mayor of Sheffield in history when he was elected last year, made the announcement at a council meeting while wearing a sombrero "in solidarity" with Mexico.

"I Magid Magid, Lord Mayor & first citizen of this city hereby declare that not only is Donald J Trump a WASTEMAN, but he is also henceforth banned from the great city of Sheffield!", he tweeted afterwards. "I further declare July 13th to be Mexico Solidarity Day!"

As Lord Mayor, Magid can't ban anyone from the city - the council could debate and collectively comdemn a person and their views, but that's about it - and his role is mainly about representing the city ceremonially. At any rate, Trump's not scheduled to stop off in the Steel City for a pie and Hendo's when he visits the UK next week.

However, Magid's also the mouthpiece of Sheffield's citizens and has condemned Trump's "ridiculous Muslim ban, withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, moving a US Embassy to Jerusalem, enforcing the imprisonment of children at borders and defending white supremacists" as well as calling for the city to be "honest, bold and courageous in our viewpoints".

A little bit more background on Magid: he grew up in Burngreave in Sheffield, having moved to the city in 1994 with his mum and five siblings as a five-year-old refugee from northern Somalia following the outbreak of the civil war and six months spent in an Ethiopian refugee camp.

Later, he earned the nickname 'Magid Magid the Submission Magician' for his proficiency in mixed martial arts, and missed his own inauguration as Lord Mayor of Sheffield as he was a contestant on Channel 4's stealth escape reality show Hunted at the time, and it would have blown his cover. You might remember him as the guy who taunted the hunters by sending them a letter calling them "mugs" in Somali.
