Netflix has warned its users about a ‘sophisticated’ and wide-reaching email scam asking for bank details.

Customers are being asked to update their card details. Following a declined payment. The email reads: “We attempted to authorise the Amex card you have on file but were unable to do so.”

Once you click on the “RESTART MEMBERSHIP’ button, you’re taken to a convincing phishing site that will steal all your money and leave you in a hole that even a 48-hour Netflix binge can’t fix.

It goes without saying that unless a foreign prince is offering you millions in an incomprehensible money-laundering scheme, you should be very wary about giving your bank details away over email. Always check that communication is coming from a legitimate source, and that any link they send you to has the proper security certifications.

Here’s what the people at Netflix have to say:

“If you suspect you have received a fraudulent email or text message that appears to be from Netflix, follow these tips to keep your information safe and secure, and follow the steps below to report the message.

“Never enter your login or financial details after following a link in an email or text message.

“Never click on any links or open any attachments in an email or text message you received unexpectedly, regardless of the source.

“If you suspect an email or text message is not from Netflix, do not reply to it.”
