The Irishman’s limited theatrical run has been the subject of much controversy over the past few weeks.

The short explanation is this: Netflix failed to negotiate a distribution deal with major cinema chains, because the streaming service wanted the 90-day theatrical window cut to 45 at the very most. As a result, the majority of cinemas are now boycotting the film.

Scorsese himself has admitted his disappointment that The Irishman won’t have an extended run on the big screen, or reach as many people, but you can understand Netflix’s position. The streaming service was the only studio willing to stump up the $159 million needed to make Marty's passion project, and it’s only fair that they actually want people to watch it on Netflix on the 27th November.

And it’s not all doom and gloom. Plenty of independent cinemas and arthouse chains in the London and Northern Ireland have agreed to show the film from 8th November, while cinemas in other areas will pick it up from 14th November.
