The trailer for Matthew McConaughey's forthcoming film has been released, and while he doesn't appear to be going back to his pre-Mcconnaissance rom-com days, it looks lighter material than some of the actor's recent work.

White Boy Rick is another true story biopic after his Oscar-winning portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club and his turn in 2016's Gold which was based on the 1993 Bre-X mining scandal.

Reporting on White Boy Rick, Vulture writes, "Based on the true life experience of a 14-year-old FBI informant and drug dealer in 1984 Detroit, the film White Boy Rick undoubtedly has moments of despair, of pain, of mourning for the families dismantled by the crack epidemic that swept through American cities in the ‘80s and ‘90s and for the lives ruined by death or imprisonment."

Richie Merritt plays McConaughey's son Rick who, "who manages to persuade his dad that dealing drugs and working with the feds would probably all work out in the end." The film also stars The Hateful Eight and Annihilation actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Judging by the scene where he irately yells at his daughter to "put some clothes on we're going for custard", it looks like there'll be plenty of laughs.

White Boy Rick is released December 7th
