A new teaser trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan's forthcoming film Wildlife makes it already look like an Oscar contender.

Through the eyes of their son we see a marriage fall apart when a couple, Jeanette (Mulligan) and Jerry (yllenhaal), move to Montana and she falls for another man.

Based on the 1990 novel of the same name by American heavyweight Richard Ford, the screenplay has been written by Paul Dano (who also directs) and the actor Zoe Kazan, who recently appeared in The Big Sick.

Dano's directorial debut has already been receiving favourable reviews for its slow-burning drama and strong performances after premiering at Sundance Film Festival and showing at Cannes Film Festival earlier this month.

Variety praised Dano's directing, writing: "The tale itself is resonant and absorbing, though in a highly deliberate way. It’s about the energies that were bubbling up from the underbelly of the late ’50s, and how they began to eat away at that clean cautious surface."

Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw described it as a "satisfying drama of damaged lives" noting of Carey Mulligan that, "it is one of the best roles and best performances of her career – giving her a chance to display maturity, wit, savvy and the emotional battle scars of life".
