Despite the reality of Brexit already resembling an implausible film plot, Channel 4 have made the decision to dramatise the events in a new one-off film.

Filming has now begun on the drama which tracks the Brexit campaign from the viewpoint of various mostly unknown strategists on both the Remain and Leave sides of the referendum. The film will focus on how using online data resulted in a shock win for... well, you know the rest.

Channel 4 has released the first image of Benedict Cumberbatch as Dominic Cummings, the strategist and Campaign Director of Vote Leave.

The film is directed by Black Mirror's Toby Haynes and also stars Skyfall's Rory Kinnear as Craig Oliver, the former Prime Minister David Cameron's Director of Communications, and The Crown's John Heffernan as Matthew Elliott, political lobbyist and Chief Executive of Vote Leave.

Elsewhere we can expect to see Richard Goulding as Boris Johnson, Oliver Maltman as Michael Gove and Paul Ryan as Nigel Farage.

"I hope by going behind-the-scenes of the campaign, we're able to interrogate the consequences of what happened during these eight weeks that have changed the country forever," said writer James Graham. "To work with this incredible team and Channel 4 to bring this story to life on screen is a real honour."

Obviously it's disappointing to hear that Owen Wilson won't be taking up the role as titular moron Boris Johnson, but as we have all learned over the last two years, Brexit is full of disappointments.
