Quentin Tarantino pitched directing a Star Trek film at the end of last year, and it quickly looked to be falling into place when The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith joined the project.

But now it looks like the project is a long way off. According to a new interview with Star Trek actor Simon Pegg, Tarantino's vision likely won't happen for five or six years.

Quentin’s idea is another thing,” he said in an interview with The Edmonton Journal. “He came in to [J.J. Abrams’ production company] Bad Robot and pitched it and it’s been put in the bank. I think he had us in mind when he came up with the idea; he likes the new cast. But he’s going to be so busy with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that I can’t see him doing it for five or six years, by which time we might be too old anyway.”

Paramount confirmed in April that there are two new Trek films in the works. It's thought that they're referring to Tarantino's version and the 'regular' Star Trek 4, which will feature the franchise's first female director, S.J. Clarkson.

Though Pegg seems to think the cast would be too old to continue on to do Tarantino's project, Spock actor Zachary Quinto said in a recent interview that,"My assumption is that it is with us. That is how it has been presented."

In summary, nobody knows when or who or whether this project will happen.
