Zac Efron has turned to the dark side with his latest film choice, playing notorious serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

Bundy was executed in 1989 after confessing to carrying out more than 30 murders over the course of at least four years in the mid-to-late-1970s.

This film is told from the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), Bundy's girlfriend who he hid his murder spree from for years, and who was instrumental in him being caught. It was only in the lead up to his execution that Bundy confessed to the extensive scope of his gruesome murders.

John Malkovich will also star as Judge Edward Cowart, who presided over Bundy's murder trial in 1979 and sentenced him to death.

Efron shared several behind-the-scenes images of him on set with Jim Parsons who plays prosecutor Larry Simpson, who led the 1979 trial that led to Bundy's conviction.

The actor also announced via his Instagram that Skins actress Kaya Scodelario has joined the cast to play Bundy's ex-wife.
