Zinedine Zidane has announced his departure from Real Madrid following a third successive Champions League win.

Real Madrid called a surprise press conference at 12pm BST today at the Bernabeu, following doubts around the future of Zidane, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

The 45-year-old Frenchman played 155 times for Real Madrid and became a club legend, before taking over the B team, Castilla.

Following the dismissal of Rafael Benitez in 2016, he led the first team to Champion’s League success in his debut season.

He completed the double in his second season, winning La Liga and the Champions League, and beat Liverpool five days ago to make it three European gongs in a row.

It’s not known whether Zidane will take some time to weigh up his options or dive straight back into management. There aren’t any obvious vacancies, following Bayern Munich’s hiring of Niko Kovac as their next manager and PSG's appointment of Thomas Tuchel.

Is it squeaky bum time for Jose Mourinho?

Zidane is well known for making rash decisions, as Marco Materazzi's concave chest will attest, but this is a sure way to protect his glorious Real Madrid legacy.
