What does Herno, a storied Italian brand renowned for making water-proof outerwear, have in common with the avant-garde Japanese label Anrealage? A new collaboration proves that the two are more aligned than you might think.

Globe is the sustainable arm of Herno, and Anrealage has been known for its innovative techniques when considering fashion’s environmental impact. In 2019, founder and creative director Kunihiko Morinaga developed a biodegradable polyester fibre for his LVMH Prize submission, creating a jacket, dress and coat that he then buried. After spending one month underground, he found that the pieces had started decomposing. Polyester can take 20 to 200 years to fully disintegrate, so this is type of advancement couldn’t come soon enough.

The collection is constructed from a mixture of recycled, organic, PFC-free and (unsurprisingly) biodegradable materials, as well as Anrealage’s signature photochromatic technology. Once exposed to sunlight, pieces like the bomber jacket, parka and Bermuda shorts will unveil the Herno monogram.

The collection’s design stays true to Morinaga’s whimsical and abstract aesthetic. Expect asymmetric hemlines, curved fastenings, utility-inspired silhouettes in an earthy colour palette.
