We weren't built for this sort of winter. The planet neither. But as the temperature drops to absurd levels, your go-to suits start to feel a bit, well, insubstantial. Italian wool they may be. Gale-proof they most certainly are not.

That's why you need to upgrade, as El Camino's Aaron Paul did at the Promise Armenian Institute Event at California's UCLA. Gone was the litheness of a Milanese two-piece, with the 40-year-old opting instead for something a bit workwear-y, a bit more robust, and a lot more weather-beating.

Namely, a corduroy suit. So far, so simple. What elevates Paul's choice, however, is a sharp fit (trousers and sleeves should never puddle, my friends), and an understanding that even in your grandfather's favourite fabric, there's flexibility at play. Just as you can go full classic professor with a shirt and tie, you can LA the look by dressing it down, as Paul did with a classic black T-shirt. Probably not the best winter layering, but that's why red carpets come flanked by heaters.

Your commute doesn't. Which is why, right now, a cord suit like this should be combined with knits and T-shirts and overcoats that will a) prevent your blood freezing solid and b) add even more texture to your outfit. You can't do this sort of stuff in summer, so enjoy the cold snap while you can.
