Jake Gyllenhaal: the perfect example of why the perennial boy-next-door should let loose (at least in the style sense, anyway). But, after Dries Van Noten psychedelia and silk kimono jackets and the sheer, unbridled joy of a man that's actually having fun with his clothes, the 38-year-old has gone classic once more. Better yet, he's still enjoying it - and looks just as good.
At a New York photo-call of his latest play, Sea Wall/A Life, Gyllenhaal used wardrobe staples to their full effect. That means a cream waffle knit (good for pairing with jeans, even better tucked into black trousers), wide leg slacks and trainers that chime with the stuff up-top.
Going back to basics needn't mean forfeiting accessories, either. Like Gyllenhaal, enlist a simple chain - ideally something thin, and without the pendants of Rick Ross et al - to elevate an outfit that doesn't try too hard.
For all the gender-fluid threads, experimental dressing and pops of colour unbeknownst to even the good folk at Pantone, classic still works. So for those who want to, like Jake, be a guy that can do both, do so below.
